Anna L. | Portland Maternity Photographer

I captured Anna in her last month of pregnancy as she awaits the birth of her second daughter.  I asked her to bring in her favorite maternity outfit and she brought in this perfect, flowy, awesome dress that she said she wore on New Year’s Eve and a couple other occasions during her pregnancy.  I love it when people bring in objects or clothing that have sentimental value or lots of personality, because I feel like that’s what you will want to remember about yourself in the years to come!  I think it’s especially perfect for a maternity session because you will want at least one fully-clothed shot to share with your soon-to-be-born child.

I think for a lot of women it’s a sublime joy and a pleasure to near the end of a pregnancy.  This might be because they are uncomfortable, or sometimes they are simply excited to meet their baby.  Regardless, the sense of accomplishment and joy always shows in a maternity portrait.

I just love these mamas!  This is quickly becoming one of my very favorite types of portrait to shoot, second only to newborn portraits!  Speaking of which, I am currently looking for a newborn, birthday between January 15-25th, for a portfolio shoot next weekend.  Contact me if you are interested!

Portrait of Three Generations | Portland Family Photographer

I had a nine-person, multi-generational family join me in the studio over the holidays to capture a portrait of them all together.  Lucky me, got to take pictures of TWO little baby girls, one 5 months and one 6 months old!  They were also joined by a fun and good-natured 5-year-old brother/cousin, plus parents and grandparents.

One of the first shots we got was the one of Colden holding sister Mia and cousin Olivia, a photo that definitely turned out as sweet as I envisioned it… what a good sport to hold two babies at once!  Speaking of good sports, these two little ladies made it through the entire shoot without hardly a peep, such sweethearts, so loved and cherished by their moms & dads, grandma & grandpa!  Also impressive was the level of cheering and coaching these guys gave each other at picture time, lots of giggles and laughs for babies, adults, and photographer.

Post-session, Colden and I started talking iPad apps, and he got me hooked on Cut the Rope, so I am not sure I will have any time in the future to edit photos since I am so addicted to this game now.

Kim D | Portland Maternity, Family Photographer

Kim asked me to photograph her with her family back-to-back with a maternity session, so we doubled up and got it all done on the same day!  These guys were awesome, especially 16-year-old Mariah, who is obviously up on her posing and helped me get some great shots of the younger kids.

Kim is due in late December with a baby boy, Oliver.  Another calm mama, she glowed through our session, projecting contentment and ease throughout. Her long, pretty blonde hair is so striking in these photographs!  Congrats to Kim & family and baby Oliver, arriving in about a week (right around Jonah’s 1st birthday!) 🙂

Rebekka H. | Portland Maternity Photographer

I did this in-studio session with Rebekka at 37 weeks, and she is one gracious and poised mama… not to mention stunnning!

I have always had the utmost respect for people who are kind and positive and remain that way through life’s most challenging moments.  Anyone who has given birth knows that being 8 1/2 months pregnant is not the most comfortable situation, however Rebekka is rosy and radiant and focused on the joys of creating new life, just so happy to be on the verge of giving birth to her daughter Josie.  Rebekka experienced the loss of a child in 2010 and started Hayden’s Helping Hands to assist other families who have experienced the birth of a stillborn baby.  I felt really moved by Rebekka’s story and since meeting her have tried to do more for others and find ways to help those experiencing difficult times or loss.  It gave me yet another reason to hug and kiss and squeeze my precious little boy.  Please consider donating to HHH.

I did this session in the studio using three Canon flashes on stands with various modifiers.  The modifier for the lacy photos is a Rogue Grid with a rose-colored gel.  I love how those turned out and plan to do some more experimenting with overlays and colored lights in the future. I also used a singular XL softbox with a strobe for some of the later shots.  Processed using Lightroom and Radlab/CS5.

Congratulations to Rebekka & family.  Beautiful Josie is almost here!

Newborn Baby S | Shadyside Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

This little sweetie was born in October to join her big sister A, who I photographed as a newborn two years ago! We shot the baby’s lifestyle newborn portrait at her family’s gorgeous Shadyside home, which is a delightful modern and open style and is a “green home,” which I think is unique & interesting and reminds me of the six years I spent in Portland, OR.

This sweet toddler is bilingual (English/German), but her laughs and smiles send a universal message of glee! What a fun and happy little girl.  We spent the first few minutes playing outside because it was a beautiful day and baby needed a little extra time to get ready.

Again A’s beautiful smile steals the show–she is such a lovely and bright little girl and so sweet to her new baby sister.  I like the family portraits on the bed, this is a great way to easily incorporate a toddler and a newborn in a family photograph.

The blue outfit was dad’s pick and was her outfit for coming home from the hospital after she was born.  The white booties are another homemade family item.  In the background of some of these photos you can se big sister A hiding behind the curtain! One of my favorite parts of a lifestyle newborn session is capturing these unstaged moments!
