Shortly after my baby was born, I saw this beautiful Nikki McClure “baby’s first year” journal at Powell’s. It had pages and pages where mom is meant to fill in details of baby’s birth and infancy and add photos and keep a journal of all the new & exciting things baby is doing throughout the first year. I loved the style of the book and thought about buying it, but I realistically admitted to myself that I was not likely to take time out during those crazy early infant days to fill it out. I am, however, reliable about taking photos and videos, which I intend to compile and organize as Jonah nears his first birthday. Here is the front/back cover and one of the inside spreads of the custom book I am making for him:
The end result is a press-printed and bound 12″ square book with lots of adorable photos of my little munchkin for us to keep forever.

Three years old might be my favorite age to photograph. They seem still unaware of the camera and just want to play. Silas and I got to spend some time in the backyard running around, and some of my favorite shots came from rolling a toy car back and forth on the picnic table. I told him to try to hit the lens with the car and he seemed to think that was pretty fun. What a great kid! And 4-month-old baby Pearl has such a pretty baby girl face, I am in love!

At the end of a standard session, I might leave with a couple hundred photos. It is my goal to not just shoot blindly but to click that shutter button only when I feel it’s a great moment for a photo. Even so, there are so many distinct interactions in the course of an hour or two that it ends up being a lot to sort through. I shoot RAW so that I will have the most flexibility with my images when I take them home and will be able to apply all sorts of creative touches or just minimal brightening or touching up when they come out almost perfect as-is.
I start by loading my photos into Lightroom. I store my work on a series of 1 tb external drives (Costco!) since shooting RAW makes each image around 25 mb. It adds up quickly, so I rely on the drives for long-term storage. Once all images are loaded into Lightroom I work through them, rejecting any image that is unacceptable (person blinking, etc.). Then I look at each series of images (there might be 4-6 from the same vantage point and lighting) and pick the best from each series of shots. Usually by then I am left with 50-75 shots. Then I pick my the best 25-50 to pare down and concentrate on.
For each photo I usually do the following series of edits:
Crop if needed. I almost never crop unless it is for printing at a certain size, but sometimes you gotta do it.
Correct any distractions such as fuzz on the clothes or crusty boogers (happens all the time with babies!). You can see above that I had to remove a couple tiny crusties from Jonah’s nose. I also softened his left cheek because it looked a little blotchy to me.
Usually there is a slight adjustment to brightness, contrast, and/or saturation here before I import to CS5.
I have been using Radlab (via CS5) lately to add creative effects. I usually bring the strength slider way down so as to not overpower the image with effects and it typically is not too far off from SOOC, just enhanced slightly. Some of my favorite Radlab stylets are “sugar rush” and “lux soft.” I also use Radlab to convert an image to black & white if it seems appropriate, but more often than not my images remain in color. The photo of Jonah above looked really special to me in black & white–I used the “milk & cookies” b/w filter in Radlab because it upped the contrast and brought attention to his eyes.
Sometimes I come up with a Radlab formula that I like for the whole series of images, so I will apply the same effect to every frame from a shoot and then adjust slightly for each image. I like most of the images from a session to have the same look, like they tell a story.
Once I am done with all the photos, I return them to Lightroom and export them to JPEG files for sharing previews with clients, but I keep the RAW files for printing & storage.
All in all, I spend about 30-60 minutes sorting and archiving each session and 5-20 minutes with each of my chosen photos. It’s important to me that every frame I release feels like a piece of my artwork that I am proud to put my name on!
Are you ready for some major cuteness? I collaborated with Crystal Misner of PoBa Clothing (short for Portland Baby!) to do a clothing shoot for her new line of unique handmade baby clothes. We headed out to Laurelhurst Park with a gaggle of babies and did the shoot last week. Special thanks to the moms for helping me wrangle the babies and get them all looking in the same direction for some of the group photos! Can you even handle these sweet little faces??
LOVE the prints. Some of the fabrics Crystal uses are vintage, nice. Two of the items she needed photographed for her line sheet and look book are baby clothes that have been repurposed from menswear: little girls’ dresses and boys’ pants. Look closely at some of the pants and you can see the original cuffs! My own little Jonah was one of the baby models, and I think that was my favorite clothing item on him 🙂 Crystal also makes retro-style cord pants with matching “bibdannas.” Jonah has one of the bibdannas and it is by far the cutest accessory he owns. I like to style it like a little baby ascot (that doubles as a drool catcher) and am looking forward to cooler weather so I can put it under a cardigan for that baby “nerd chic” look. The bibdannas are very affordable and are for sale on the PoBa site.
